Factory to Frontline: Meriden in the Civil War

From factory floors to training camps, discover how Meriden workers, families, and soldiers experienced the war—at home and on the frontline.  During the Civil War era, the city of Meriden emerged as an important center of  industry, demonstrating how northern manufacturing supported the Union war effort. Known especially for its silver and metalworking factories, Meriden produced a wide range of goods, including military equipment, for the war effort.

Parker Brothers was a major firearms manufacturer in Meriden during the Civil War era, producing rifles and other weapons for Union forces. Founded by brothers Charles, Edmund, and Wilbur Parker, the company became known for its precision engineering and high-quality gunmaking techniques. After the war, Parker shifted its focus toward sporting firearms, especially the famous Parker shotgun, which became one of the most respected American double-barreled shotguns of the late 19th century.
